        History of the Highland Games

Historically, due to various occupations of their country, the men of Scotland were forbidden to bear or train with arms, in an attempt to prevent another uprising. It is believed that to prepare for the inevitable battle, with the implements of war replaced with the implements of the Highland game, warriors participated in contests to build their strengths and skills for battle, while earning respect and favor within their clan. The contests (our current athletic events) simulated throwing stones from battlements, throwing ladders up castle walls, and swinging the long and heavy Claymore Scottish sword.
